I Wish I Would Have Known…

Older man thinkingLife takes twists and turns, many times towards unexpected paths. Through marriage, blended families, home ownership, careers, children, pets, hobbies, moves, health, travel, and retirement – just to name a few – life can get messy and complicated. But joy can also be found on the next page of your adventure.

But first, a few stats to put things into perspective. As of the 2016 population estimate from the Census Bureau, one out of every four adults in the U.S. is over the age of 65, and probably making some key “next chapter” decisions in their lives. Fifteen percent of the overall population is over the age of 65. Twenty three percent is under the age of 18. That leaves 62 percent of the population between the ages of 18 and 64 to tend not only to their own families, careers and lives, but also potentially that of their aging parents.

With all of these life activities and events going on, life can get super-sized and cluttered. Collections and hobbies, not to mention guilt or fear, all contribute to why our “life” gets bigger than what we can handle at certain times. We grow, we can get messy, we may grow again, and then we may want or need simplicity back in our lives.

Being organizationally proactive can be nice, but you may not have always have this luxury. Consider a growing family that needs to relocate to another home due to a job promotion (and more responsibility), possibly to another city or state. Or a couple who has lived in their six-bedroom house for 30 years, and one of the partners has recently become the primary caregiver due to a health event with the other. Life just happens.
